Solution of Question No 33 of GATE 2016 Civil Paper

Fundamental principal of GPS is tringulation. For tringulation GPS receiver measures distance using travel time of radio signal. Along with distance we should know exactly where the satelites are in space, which is achived by close monitoring of space. As timing is not perfect, so we take one more satellite.

Note: if 3 perfect measurement can locate a point in space, then four imperfect measurement can do the same thing.
